MC vs. USDOT Number: A Freight Team's Lookup Guide
Understand carrier identifiers, match the right entity, and check current authority without confusing a registration number with permission to haul.

What each number tells you
The USDOT number identifies an entity in FMCSA systems. MC, FF, and MX docket numbers have historically related to operating-authority proceedings. Neither a number on a document nor a search result alone proves that the entity may perform the movement you are arranging.
A useful lookup sequence
- Search the supplied USDOT number and compare the legal name and DBA.
- Match any supplied authority identifier to the same entity.
- Check current registrations, authority, and relevant insurance records.
- Investigate conflicting names, phone numbers, or payment instructions.
Registration modernization is not a shortcut
FMCSA's current modernization FAQ describes a proposed move away from MC numbers and the use of registration suffixes. It says ending MC-number issuance is under consideration, not a change to assume from the first release of Motus. Check official guidance for updates; keep existing identifiers in your audit trail.
When no matching record appears
Check for a mistyped number or a different legal name. Do not create a favorable carrier decision from an empty result. Ask for verified identifiers and resolve the mismatch using the official record before proceeding.
