Frequently asked questions
- Is this carrier insurance lookup free?
- Yes. There is no account. Enter an MC or USDOT number and the tool shows public FMCSA census fields: authority, whether required insurance is on file, the safety rating, inspection and out-of-service counts, and reported crashes.
- Does “on file” mean the cargo is covered?
- No. “On file” means FMCSA’s census shows a required filing. It is not a certificate of insurance, and it does not list limits, commodities, or exclusions. Confirm coverage with the insurer or authorized agent before you book.
- What does the safety rating mean?
- FMCSA’s safety rating is Satisfactory, Conditional, or Unsatisfactory, from a compliance review. Many carriers have no rating. A blank is not a clean record. Read inspections, out-of-service rates, and crashes beside it.
- How current is this data?
- Results come from FMCSA’s public QCMobile service and can be up to 24 hours old. FMCSA’s SAFER, Licensing & Insurance, and Safety Measurement System pages are the source of record.
