What to check on the FMCSA record
- Identity. Legal name, DBA, address and phone match the documents and the contact you are dealing with.
- Authority. The operating authority needed for this move is active, not pending, inactive or revoked.
- Insurance. Required filings are on file, with no pending cancellation. Confirm cargo coverage with the agent.
- Safety. Read out-of-service rates, inspections, crashes and any rating in context. A blank is not a clean record.
Insurance on file, safety rating, inspections, and crashes are on the insurance and safety lookup. Learn more in MC vs. USDOT number and the carrier due diligence checklist. Live details come from FMCSA's public QCMobile service and can be up to 24 hours old; FMCSA's own pages are the source of record. This tool is not affiliated with or endorsed by FMCSA.
Frequently asked questions
- Is this MC number lookup free?
- Yes. There is no account or signup. The tool checks the format of what you enter, shows public FMCSA carrier details for USDOT and MC numbers and links to the matching official FMCSA pages; it does not store your searches.
- What is the difference between an MC number and a USDOT number?
- A USDOT number identifies a registered company and its safety record. An MC (or MX/FF) docket number is tied to interstate operating authority for hire. A company can have a USDOT number without active authority, so check both.
- Does this tool show live carrier data?
- Yes, for USDOT and MC numbers. It shows the carrier's identity, operating status, out-of-service status, authority, cargo and fleet size from FMCSA's public QCMobile service, with the time it was retrieved (results can be up to 24 hours old). FMCSA's SAFER, SMS and Licensing & Insurance pages remain the source of record, and company-name searches open SAFER directly.
- Why can't I find a carrier by MC number?
- Recheck the digits and the prefix (MC, MX or FF), then search by USDOT number or legal name. New, inactive or revoked registrations and recent record changes can also explain a mismatch. Resolve it before you dispatch.
- What should I verify after the lookup?
- Match the legal name, DBA, address and phone to the documents you received, confirm the authority needed for the move is active, check insurance filings and any pending cancellation, and read safety information in context.
